Be prepared to answer the following
essay questions:
1. What are some of the art forms created for the Chinese kings
and later emperors? What was the concept of the Mandate of Heaven and
how did this influence the perception and role of the Chinese kings and
emperors? What materials were favored for the Chinese
court? What similarities do you see between the Chinese kings/emperors and the arts created for them and the Benin and Mayan kings and their arts?
2. Discuss what you have learned about Chinese painting--materials, style, technique, and symbolism using Fan Kuan's Travelers Among Mountains and Streams to illustrate your points.
3. What have you learned about the meaning and function of "arts"
around the world? At the beginning of the semester we read the
Nacirema and discussed the etic (outsider's) and emic (insider's)
perspectives. Would you define/classify the
following as "art" : The Shaft Scene at
Lascaux, a Plains pipe, an Archaic bannerstone, a Yorubu ibeji figure, Fan Kuan's Travelers
Among Mountains and Streams? Why or why not? (explain your reasoning for each). Would the people who created these works define/classify them as art? Why or why not? (explain your reasoning for each, including references to the reasons for these objects creation)
4. Which of the following most closely parallels the form and function of Shi Huang Di's Tomb? (Explain not only the reasons behind your choice, but also provide detailed explanations as to why you did NOT select each of the others): Stonehenge, the Pyramid
of the Sun at Teotihuacan, Temple I at Tikal, or Serpent Mound in Ohio?
